Spain – The old synagogue of Barcelona vandalized

Barcelona – The old synagogue of Barcelona, located in the historical district of the city, has suffered vandalism once again – as reported by the ‘Amics dels Calls de Catalunya’ (the Friends of the Jewish quarters of Catalunya) on social media. Those responsible for the synagogue found the main façade of the temple with graffiti and the mezuzah pulled from the door, a parchment with specific Hebrew verses from the Torah.

The ‘Amics dels Calls de Catalunya’ denounced the dirt surrounding the temple and the deteriorating state of the Jewish quarter of Barcelona. They ensure that it is very dirty and abandoned, a situation that leads to the irreversible deterioration of the city’s Jewish heritage. They, therefore, call upon the City Council to take urgent measures to curb its degradation.

The synagogue of Barcelona today is considered one of the oldest preserved throughout Europe, although it does not currently function as a place of worship and is museized.
