Akron, OH – The Shaw Jewish Community Center’s outdoor pool area was vandalized overnight May 30, according to Daniel Blain, CEO of Jewish Community Board of Akron.
“The Shaw JCC was victim to vandalism last night at the outdoor pool,” Blain wrote in a mail to the Akron Jewish News. “The incident took place just before midnight with teenagers painting profanity, smashing glass attempting to break into the snack bar, trashing the guard shack and throwing furnishings into the pool. There is no indication of antisemitism as it relates to this incident. The Akron police sent a crime scene unit and is conducting the investigation. Anyone associated with vandalism will be held liable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Lt. Michael Miller of the Akron Police Department wrote in a May 31 email to the AJN that police did not take photographs.
“The matter will be forwarded for review and possible further investigation,” Miller wrote.
Blain said the maintenance and aquatic staff were working to clean the area “and expect to have the pool open at some point this afternoon.”
He also addressed security concerns.
“JCC and Schultz Campus leadership will also be assessing whether any additional security measures should be implemented based on this incident,” he said.
