Hannover – On the evening of Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday, January 27, 2023, unknown persons intentionally damaged or destroyed the wreaths laid on the “Wall of Names” on the grounds of the Ahlem Memorial. The wreaths laid down at the site of the former Ahlem concentration camp were also damaged. The Hanover region has turned on the police, who are already investigating.

Regional President Steffen Krach says: “Here, symbols of the common remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust were literally trampled on. This wanton destruction mocks and insults each and every one of the people listed on the Wall of Names who were killed by National Socialism. We will also report this right-wing extremist crime. Defensive democracy must not be an empty phrase. The Ahlem Memorial opposes any form of historical oblivion that is expressed in such right-wing extremist-motivated incidents against a place of remembrance – with consistent and courageous remembrance and educational work.”
