Italy – Antisemitic writings on art works in Volterra

Volterra – Works of art defaced with fascist writings in Volterra. On Memorial Day, some works of art exhibited in Volterra, in the province of Pisa, were defaced with antisemitic writings and with swastikas. One of the reads: The Jews to the fire (gli Ebrei al rogo).

The municipality of Volterra gave the news, which posted the images on its Facebook page.

“The disfigurement of a work of art is already in itself a cowardly and unspeakable gesture. However, what happened this morning – writes the municipal administration – is not only unspeakable, but represents an action of human and moral baseness which has no equal. This morning, in fact, the panels inside the Gioconovo underpass, related to the “Poetic Alabaster” project by the artist Giuseppangela Campus, were defaced with writings praising fascism, swastikas and more can neither be justified nor tolerated, especially on a day like this where we celebrate Remembrance Day”.
