Mississauga, ON – Police are investigating after antisemitic graffiti was found in a Mississauga Park.
The graffiti was found in Mississauga Valley Park this week, according to social media posts from Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie.
“I am angered and horrified to learn of the antisemitic graffiti at Mississauga Valley Park, especially during Hanukkah,” Crombie wrote on Twitter on Dec. 20. “Hate has no place in Mississauga, and I have asked police to conduct a swift investigation and lay charges where warranted.”
Peel Regional Police said they received a report about the graffiti at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. The Criminal Investigations Bureau is currently investigating and there were no further details.
Crombie said this should be a joyous time when the Jewish community comes together to celebrate Hanukkah.
“This is deeply concerning and unacceptable, and has absolutely no place in our community,” Crombie writes.
She has asked police to conduct the investigation as quickly as possible, and lay charges where warranted.
City staff are also working to remove the graffiti immediately.
“I will reiterate that hate and racism have no place in our City,” she writes. “We will not let hatred take root in our city and we will do everything in our power to stop it.”
Mississauga is a community that embraces diversity and celebrates the myriad of religions and cultures in the city, she continues.
“I want our Jewish community to know that I stand with you, especially during this time of peace, joy and celebration,” she writes. “Do not let this incident break your spirit, this is not representative of who we are as a city. Continue to be proud of who you are, thrive in our community and keep lighting the menorah as you celebrate Hanukkah.”
